Best overall alternatives: Claude and Gemini

Claude

Claude is the closest like-for-like replacement and, for many people, an upgrade. Its free plan includes web search, memory, file creation, code execution, Artifacts, connectors and voice mode. Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly) adds Claude Opus 5.5, Research, unlimited Projects and Claude Code. Opus 5.5 was first on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index and LMArena's WebDev board in mid-October 2026.

Pick it if you write, analyse documents or code. Skip it if you want image or video generation, which Claude doesn't do.

Google Gemini

Gemini's free plan is the most generous of the big three: image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice, Canvas, Gems and Gemini Notebook. Paid plans start at $4.99 (AI Plus), and AI Pro at $19.99 adds Gemini 4 Argon, which topped LMArena's text leaderboard on 16 October 2026 (with a preliminary rating), plus 5 TB of storage and Gemini in Gmail and Docs.

Pick it if you use Google apps, want the most for free or need to work with video and audio. Skip it if you don't want your AI tied to a Google account.

Best free ChatGPT alternative with image upload: Microsoft Copilot

Copilot's free tier lets you upload up to 20 files per conversation, each up to 50 MB, including photos and screenshots, and it can create images too. If you already pay for Microsoft 365 Personal ($9.99 a month), Copilot is included in that plan.

Gemini is the other strong free option for images: its free plan includes image generation and editing. Mistral's Le Chat free plan also includes basic image generation and editing, with limited document uploads.

Best for studying: Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Khanmigo

  • Gemini Guided Learning walks you through a topic step by step instead of just giving answers. Google's release notes describe it as open to all users.
  • Gemini Notebook (renamed from NotebookLM in July 2026) is the stand-out study tool: upload your lecture notes, readings and PDFs, and it answers from those sources only. The free plan allows 100 notebooks with up to 50 sources each.
  • Student offers: Google offers eligible university students aged 18 and over a free year of a Google AI plan (the plan depends on your country; check the students page). Mistral's Le Chat Pro costs $5.99 a month for students for up to 12 months.
  • Khanmigo from Khan Academy is built for school learning and guides students rather than handing over answers. It costs $4 a month for parents and learners, is free for teachers, and is US only.

Claude and ChatGPT also have learning features (ChatGPT's study mode is on every plan), so if you already use one, try its study mode before switching.

Best for research: Perplexity

Perplexity is built around search: every answer comes with citations you can click to check. The free tier covers everyday search; Pro ($17 a month billed yearly) adds deep research, a choice of models and Computer access. Max is listed at $167 a month billed yearly, although one of Perplexity's own help articles still says $200 a month, so check before you buy.

Gemini's Deep Research is free on the base plan and is the best free alternative for longer research reports. Claude's Research feature needs Pro.

Best private alternatives

Option What it promises Free?
Proton Lumo Zero-access encryption, no logs, never trains on your data, open source Yes (limited); Plus $9.99/mo
Duck.ai No tracking, prompts not stored, no training, history kept on your device Yes, several models free
Local model (Ollama, LM Studio, Jan) Nothing leaves your computer Yes

Duck.ai's free models include GPT-6 Luna, Claude 4.5 Haiku and Mistral Small 4, so you get well-known models without paying. Lumo comes from Proton, the company behind Proton Mail, and can work with files in Proton Drive.

These services make privacy promises; a local model is the only option where you don't have to take anyone's word for it.

Best local and offline alternatives

Running a model on your own computer means no account, no subscription and no data leaving your machine.

  • LM Studio is a free desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux that runs models with MLX and llama.cpp. It's the easiest start for non-developers.
  • Ollama runs local models free and "always unlimited." It also sells optional cloud plans.
  • Jan is "Free & Open source" and can run open models locally or connect to cloud ones.

Which model? On a well-specced laptop or desktop, Qwen3.8-27B (Apache 2.0) is a strong all-rounder. Meta's new Muse Spark Open is far bigger: Meta says it is optimised for two Mac Studios with M5 Ultra, so it's not a laptop model. Read how to run an LLM locally and Ollama vs LM Studio to get set up.

# After installing Ollama, download and chat with a model in one step
ollama run <model-name>

Local models are slower and less capable than the best cloud models, and you need a good GPU or a Mac with plenty of unified memory. For drafting, summarising and private documents, they are often good enough.

Other alternatives worth knowing

  • Meta AI is free for everyday use; Meta One plans ($7.99 and $19.99 a month) add more image and video generation. Meta's new Muse Wonder model is rolling out to subscribers first.
  • DeepSeek has a free chat app; its site currently shows DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash as the model.
  • Grok from xAI has a limited free tier and paid plans from $8 a month.
  • Mistral Le Chat is a good pick if you prefer a European provider; Pro is $14.99 a month.

For coding specifically, a dedicated tool beats any chat app: see our best AI coding assistant guide.

What you give up when you leave ChatGPT

Switching is easy, but be honest about what ChatGPT does that others don't, as of October 2026:

  • Intelligent UI. Since 7 October, ChatGPT answers can include charts, buttons, forms and small interactive tools. It is new and specific to ChatGPT.
  • One app for everything. ChatGPT Plus bundles chat, image creation, voice, a Work agent and Codex for coding. Claude has no image generation; Perplexity is search-first.
  • Your history and memory. Your past chats and saved memory don't move with you. Export anything you need first.
  • Custom GPTs you already use. Existing GPTs still work in ChatGPT, though OpenAI's FAQ says personal plans can no longer create new ones.

And what you gain: Claude's stronger writing and coding, Gemini's bigger free plan and storage, Perplexity's citations, or real privacy from Lumo, Duck.ai or a local model.

App Cheapest paid Main paid Top tier
Claude Pro: $20/mo ($17 yearly) Pro Max: from $100/mo
Gemini AI Plus: $4.99/mo AI Pro: $19.99/mo AI Ultra: $99.99 or $199.99/mo
Microsoft Copilot M365 Personal: $9.99/mo M365 Premium: $19.99/mo M365 Pro: $99.99/mo
Perplexity Pro: $17/mo billed yearly Pro Max: $167/mo billed yearly
Mistral Le Chat Pro: $14.99/mo Pro Team: $24.99/user/mo
Grok Plus: $8/mo Premium: $30/mo Ultra: $200/mo
Proton Lumo Plus: $9.99/mo Plus Plus

For comparison, ChatGPT Go is $8 a month and Plus is $20. As of October 2026.

How to choose

  1. Write down what you use ChatGPT for most. Writing, homework, research, images or coding each have a different best pick.
  2. Try two free tiers side by side with the same three real prompts.
  3. Check the one feature you can't live without on the free tier (image upload, file size, voice, history).
  4. Consider privacy. If you paste work documents or personal details, a private service or a local model may matter more than raw quality.
  5. Pay monthly first. Plans and models changed several times in September and October 2026 alone.

The bottom line

Claude is the best ChatGPT alternative for writing and coding, Gemini for free use and studying, Perplexity for research, Copilot for free image upload, and Lumo, Duck.ai or a local model for privacy. All have free tiers, so the cheapest way to choose is to try two of them this week. For which model is strongest overall, see our best LLM guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best alternative to ChatGPT?+

For most people, Claude or Google Gemini. Claude is stronger for writing and coding; Gemini has the most generous free plan and ties into Google apps. For research with citations, Perplexity is the best fit.

Is there a free ChatGPT alternative with image upload?+

Yes. Microsoft Copilot's free tier accepts up to 20 files per conversation, up to 50 MB each, including images, and Gemini's free plan includes image editing. Both are free with a personal account.

Which AI is better than ChatGPT for studying?+

Gemini is a strong choice: its free plan includes Guided Learning and Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) with up to 100 notebooks of 50 sources each. Khanmigo is built for school learning and guides students to answers rather than giving them.

Is there a private ChatGPT alternative?+

Yes. Duck.ai from DuckDuckGo says prompts are not stored or used for training, and Proton's Lumo uses zero-access encryption and keeps no logs. For full privacy, run an open-weight model on your own computer with Ollama, LM Studio or Jan.

Is there an ethical alternative to ChatGPT?+

It depends what you mean by ethical. If your concern is data use, Proton Lumo and Duck.ai make strong no-training privacy commitments, and local models keep everything on your device. Claude's consumer plans let you opt out of training on your chats.

Is ChatGPT still the best AI?+

It is still the most used: in Google Trends it has about twice Gemini's search interest. On quality, independent leaderboards in October 2026 put Claude Opus 5.5 and Gemini 4 Argon at or near the top, so ChatGPT is no longer the clear leader.
