ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all cost about $20 a month for their main paid plan, and the right one depends on what you do most. Pick ChatGPT if you want the widest set of features in one app, Claude if your work is writing, coding or long careful analysis, and Gemini if you live in Gmail and Google Docs or want the most storage and media tools for the money. If you only want one free app, any of the three is good enough to start.

Updated October 2026. Prices are in US dollars as published by each company; they vary by country.

Which model you actually get

The app is only as good as the model behind it, and each plan gives you a different one.

Plan level ChatGPT Claude Gemini
Free GPT-6 Luna (see note) Sonnet and Haiku Flash-Lite
Main paid GPT-6 Sol in Chat; GPT-6 Astra in Work and Codex Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 Gemini 4 Argon, Pro and Flash
Power GPT-6 Pro (powered by GPT-6 Astra) All of the above, more usage, Fable 5.1 within limits Gemini 4 Argon with the highest limits

Two things to know:

  • ChatGPT Free and Go. OpenAI's 7 October announcement says Free and Go get GPT-6 Luna in Chat, but its help centre article still says GPT-5.6 Luna. Expect the smaller model either way. See GPT-6 Sol vs Luna for the difference.
  • Gemini 4 Argon reached the Gemini app for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers on 13 October 2026. It is Google's new flagship; read our Gemini 4 Argon guide.

How do the top models compare? On LMArena's text leaderboard (16 October 2026), Gemini 4 Argon was first with a preliminary rating and Claude Opus 5.5 third; GPT-6.1 Sol was 22nd. On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, Claude Opus 5.5 led, with GPT-6 Astra and Gemini 4 Argon tied a few points behind. Our best LLM guide goes model by model.

ChatGPT: the broadest all-rounder

What's good. ChatGPT has the most features in one place. Since 7 October, GPT-6 brings what OpenAI calls Intelligent UI: answers can mix text with charts, buttons, forms and small interactive tools such as a bill splitter or savings calculator. Plus adds a "Work agent" that acts across your apps and files, Codex for coding, deep research, Projects, image creation, voice and expanded memory with 20 GB of storage. Study mode, which guides you through problems instead of handing over answers, is on every plan including Free when you're signed in.

The catches.

  • The Free and Go plans may show ads in some countries.
  • OpenAI doesn't publish message counts for paid plans.
  • The best model (GPT-6 Astra) is only fully available in Chat from the $100 Pro tier up; Plus users get it in Work and Codex.
  • Personal plans can no longer create new custom GPTs, according to OpenAI's Free tier FAQ.

Best for: people who want one subscription that does a bit of everything, including images and voice.

Claude: best for writing, coding and deep work

What's good. Claude Pro gives you Anthropic's top everyday model, Opus 5.5, which Anthropic says "leads in agentic coding, computer use, and knowledge work." The bigger win for many people is that Pro includes Claude Code, Anthropic's coding agent, at no extra cost; see Claude Code vs Codex vs Cursor. Pro also adds Research, unlimited Projects and Claude in Chrome. Even the Free plan includes web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors, Artifacts and voice mode. Every plan lists a context window of "up to 1M" tokens, varying by model.

The catches.

  • No image generation or video tools of the kind ChatGPT and Gemini offer.
  • No budget tier: the step from Free to Pro is $20 a month (or $17 a month billed yearly).
  • Usage runs on a rolling 5-hour window plus weekly limits, with no fixed message count. Heavy users hit the ceiling and need Max (from $100).
  • Free users don't get Opus, Research or Claude Code, and Projects are capped at five.

Best for: writers, analysts, researchers and developers who care most about the quality of long answers.

Gemini: best value and best for Google users

What's good. Google AI Pro at $19.99 bundles a lot beyond chat: Gemini 4 Argon, a 1M-token context window, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids, 5 TB of Google storage, video generation credits and YouTube Premium Lite. The free plan is generous, with image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice, Canvas and Gems. Gemini Notebook (the tool formerly called NotebookLM) lets free users keep 100 notebooks with up to 50 sources each, which is excellent for study and research. Gemini 4 Argon also accepts video and audio, which the other two don't.

The catches.

  • The free plan runs a small Flash-Lite model, so free answers are weaker than on paid tiers.
  • Limits are compute-based and refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly cap, without published numbers.
  • Plans are for people 18 and over.
  • The value depends on using Google's ecosystem; if you don't need storage or Workspace, much of the bundle is wasted.

Best for: Google Workspace users, families who need storage, students and anyone working with video, audio or large PDFs.

The power plans: are they worth $100 or more?

All three now sell plans far above $20, and they are not the same deal.

ChatGPT Pro Claude Max Google AI Ultra
Price $100, $200 or $500/mo From $100/mo (5x or 20x Pro usage) $99.99 or $199.99/mo
What you mainly get GPT-6 Pro (GPT-6 Astra) in Chat, more Work and Codex usage, 100 GB storage Far more Claude and Claude Code usage, priority access, API credits included Highest Gemini 4 Argon limits, Veo 3.1 video, Flow credits, YouTube Premium, from 20 TB storage
Who it suits Heavy daily users and coders on Codex Developers who live in Claude Code Creators and families who use the media tools and storage

These plans make sense only if you hit the limits of the $20 tier every week. Claude says Pro gives at least five times Free's usage, and Max multiplies Pro by five or twenty; OpenAI says Pro is "Unlimited subject to abuse guardrails." If you're not regularly hitting limits, the $20 plan is the better buy.

Privacy and your data

  • Claude: the pricing page lists training on your chats as "Opt-out" on every consumer plan, so you can switch it off in settings.
  • ChatGPT: Business plans don't train on business data by default, according to OpenAI's pricing page. On personal plans, check the data controls in settings.
  • Gemini: Google AI plans are for people 18 and over; check your Google account's privacy settings for how Gemini activity is kept.
  • For work documents, a business plan (ChatGPT Business, Claude Team or Gemini for business) gives you admin controls and clearer terms than a personal subscription.

If you'd rather nothing leaves your computer, none of these three is the answer; see the local options in our alternatives guide.

If you're a developer: API prices

The apps and the APIs are billed separately. If you build on the models, these are the list prices per million tokens (input / output) as of October 2026:

Model Input Output
GPT-6 Sol / GPT-6.1 Sol $2 $10
GPT-6 Astra $10 $50
Claude Sonnet 5.5 $2 $10
Claude Opus 5.5 $4 $20
Gemini 4 Argon $2 until 30 November 2026, then $4 $10, then $20

How to choose in five minutes

  1. List your top three uses. Writing reports? Coding? Planning trips? Homework?
  2. Try all three free plans with the same prompt on one of those tasks. Keep the answer you'd need to edit least.
  3. Check what's bundled. If you already pay for Google storage or YouTube Premium, Google AI Pro may effectively cost you less. If you write code, Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus both include a coding agent.
  4. Start monthly, not yearly. Models change every few weeks; all three were updated between September and October 2026.
  5. Don't pay for two unless you need to. Many people pair one paid app with the free tier of another for a second opinion.

Looking beyond these three? Our ChatGPT alternatives guide covers Perplexity, Copilot, Le Chat, private and local options.

The bottom line

For most people, ChatGPT Plus is the safest all-round $20, Claude Pro is the better $20 for writing and coding (with Claude Code and Opus 5.5 included), and Google AI Pro is the best value bundle, especially for Google users. All three have good free plans, so test before you pay.
